The American Reality: People Are Rationing Medication and Avoiding Care Because They Can’t Afford It

In America, people are struggling with illness AND with the cost of staying alive. The reality is that people are avoiding care and rationing medication because they cannot afford it. This, in a nutshell, is a tragedy, and it is happening all over the United States.

The New Normal: Rationing Medication to Survive 

One in four adults in America says they can’t afford their prescriptions. So what do they do? People are cutting pills in half, skipping doses, delaying refills, or abandoning prescriptions entirely in favor of over-the-counter options. Not only can this worsen their condition, but it can also be dangerous. 

Insulin rationing is one of the most devastating and deadly examples. Insulin can cost around $300 or more per vial. Many diabetics need more than one vial a month. The cost of survival is extreme. So people dilute it, or simply go without. And some die because of it.

But insulin isn’t the only medication being rationed. Heart failure patients are skipping blood thinners. Cancer patients delay chemo because they can’t afford the next round. Seniors are cutting blood pressure pills in half to make them last longer. And people with infections share antibiotics or use expired ones.

Avoiding Hospitals Because the Bill Is Scarier Than the Symptoms 

Many Americans are skipping care altogether.  A 2026 national survey found that 92% of adults have delayed or abandoned medical care because of the associated cost. That includes ER visits, specialist appointments, and diagnostic tests.

But if you avoid medical care, the condition will worsen. They are aware of this. And yet, they still decide to face the repercussions of worsening health rather than see the bill they would need to pay if they got it sorted. 

Until affordability becomes a right instead of a privilege, Americans will continue to ration the exact care that keeps them alive.
