How Insurance Companies Use Time Against You

There is a tactic so common in insurance disputes that it appears in almost every case. The tactic?

Delays.

Insurance companies are skilled at using time as leverage. The longer a dispute drags on, the more likely the other side is to give up. They may even miss a deadline that cannot be recovered. It is a deliberate strategy.

A delay is a business decision.

Delay tactics are designed to slow down and complicate the claims process. It buys time for the insurer to hold onto funds. Every day a claim remains unresolved is a day the insurer holds money that should have been paid. It is a calculated business strategy. And the reasons given for them are often not even real.

What delays actually look like in practice.

Requesting repeated documentation is one of the most common delay tactics. Especially after the initial paperwork has already been submitted. The insurance provider is deliberately prolonging the claims process.

They will sometimes ask for one piece of information, then another weeks later. Since insurers typically know what information they need from the beginning, this is a clear stalling tactic.

Cases also get reassigned. This tactic is known as churning. Now the claimant needs to start from the beginning. But the clock doesn’t reset. It keeps running, and the claimant is running out of time.

The deadlines most people don't know about.

This is where delays become even more serious. Missing a deadline can end a case entirely. But the delays created by insurers are designed to push claimants closer to those dates.

What insurers are counting on.

Insurance companies use delay tactics, hoping that claimants will give up or accept a lower settlement. That lowball offer starts looking pretty good in comparison to the fight ahead. People give in.

So what can you do?

  1. Document everything. Keep records of every interaction. This becomes the foundation of any legal challenge.

  2. Know the deadlines or ask if you don't. Confirm them in writing. Research them. Find out exactly when the response window closes.

  3. Don’t give up. You can win if you push through.

Time is not neutral in health insurance disputes. Insurance companies understand exactly how to use it to their advantage. Patients deserve to understand it too.
