5 Things To Do Before You Call A Lawyer

Reaching out to a lawyer can feel overwhelming. Combine that with an already stressful situation, confusing paperwork, or a system that seems stacked against you? Nerve-racking. But the good news is that you don’t have to have everything figured out before you make that call and reach out. There are a few simple things that you can do and prepare to make sure that your consultation is smooth, clear, and productive.

Whether you are a physician navigating a contract issue or a patient dealing with insurance denials or more, these five steps will help you go into that first conversation feeling prepared, organized, and empowered.

1. Write Down the Timeline

Even a rough outline is more helpful than nothing at all.  It doesn’t need to be perfect, but write down the key events in the order that they happened. Dates, conversations, statements, appointments, emails - really anything that feels relevant. A clear timeline will help your lawyer understand the bigger picture faster and spot important details quickly.

Think of it as giving your lawyer a road map.

2. Gather the Documents

Gather all of it. If it exists, save it. Screenshots, letters, bills, or statements. Anything related to the issue should be saved in one place. You don’t need to organize it perfectly, but you should gather it.

Lawyers can’t build a strong case without evidence, so the more you are able to provide, the faster they can assess what is going on and what your options are.

3. Don’t Edit or “Clean Up” Anything

Your lawyer wants and needs the messy version. People often try to “tidy up” evidence or summarize conversations. Don’t. The unfiltered version is the most accurate. It is also the most helpful.

Your lawyer isn’t judging you; they are looking for facts. Let them see the real story so that they can find the patterns and find the leverage.

4. Make a List of Your Questions

Guaranteed, you will forget some of your questions when the call starts. Write them down in advance. Legal conversations move fast, and it is easy to get overwhelmed and sidetracked. No lawyer wants you to leave the call feeling more confused than before, so if you are prepared with all of your questions, you can leave the call with clarity.

Think about what you want to understand:

- What are my options

- What should I do next

- What are the risks

- What’s the timeline

- What will this cost

A prepared client is an empowered client.

5. Know Your Goal

Clarity helps your lawyer help you. Ask yourself: ‘What am I hoping to get out of this?’ Do you want answers, a strategy, or representation? You do not need to have a perfect plan in place. You just need a sense of direction. When your lawyer knows your goal, they can help you get there faster.

You do not need to have everything figured out before you reach out to a lawyer, but the five steps above can save time, reduce stress, and give you a solid foundation from which to start. The most important thing is knowing that you are not expected to navigate this alone. A good lawyer will meet you where you are, prepared or not, and help you take the right next step.

What Every Doctor Should Know Before Speaking Up

Speaking up in healthcare takes a lot of courage. Doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers often see things that aren’t right, such as unsafe care, fraud, harassment, or misuse of medical tools.
